Our Camp

The summer camp program has served the youth of the Western Diocese for over 40 years. After renting for more than 20 years, our long-time dream of having our own camp became a reality. In December 1987, the Western Diocese became the proud owner of the former Bob Mathias Olympic Training facility, which is nestled in the forest of the San Joaquin Valley. Camp Hye Sierra is a 160-acre property located about 35 miles east of Fresno . It is within five miles of the entrance to Kings Canyon and the Sequoia National Park at an elevation of 4,400 feet. The property offers a unique, serene retreat setting, perfect for reflection and fellowship.

The campers sleep in one of our twelve charming cabins which are equipped to house approximately ten campers and two staff members per cabin. A large bathhouse, constructed since the purchase of our campsite, is centrally located within close proximity to each of the cabins.

Our main lodge, lovingly referred to as the “Mess Hall,” is where we congregate at mealtime. The beautiful deck which wraps around the lodge serves as a favorite location for our Ice Cream Socials, many of our evening activities, afternoon classes and provides us with a great place to snap camp photos.

We are lucky to have two beautiful lakes on the property, one for fishing and one for swimming. Chapel services take place in our gorgeous lakeside arbor as the sun glistens off the sparkling water. Morning and afternoon classes, dances, and our Talent Show also take place here. Nestled along side the lake is a large campfire area where campers have a chance to perform skits, sing songs, and roast marshmallows.

Constantly undergoing beautification efforts, our camp is enjoying the newest addition of an arts and crafts pavilion. This inspiring open-air complex provides space for even the most ambitious and messy projects in a most relaxing atmosphere.

Our sprawling facility also includes a large sports field, basketball and volleyball courts, ping-pong tables, and an archery range for the enjoyment of the campers.

The Summer Camp program offers an enriching atmosphere where our youth can find their religious and cultural roots. Many of you have already reaped the harvest of the friendship, love and benefits derived from summer camp by someone in your family who has attended over the years. May the magic of this program continue on for many generations to come.
